Rowan Atkinson creates epic comedy for Netflix and we're already buzzing
Rowan Atkinson has co-created a new comedy with Netflix, and we’re already buzzing.
The Mr Bean actor is set to bless us with Man Vs Bee, which is among seven new original shows on the streaming platform, and produced in the UK.
His series will focus on a man who unwittingly goes up against a bee while housesitting a mansion.
Anne Mensah, vice president of UK original series at Netflix, celebrated the news, lifting the lid on its new slate of offerings.
‘Setting up a team entirely based in the UK was always about being able to better connect to the fantastic programme makers we have here – to provide a space for writers, producers and actors that feels local, friendly and familiar but also provides talent the opportunity to make shows that will impact on a global scale,’ she said.
‘UK-made stories really do speak to the world. I couldn’t be more excited by the mix of people who are now producing for Netflix.
‘It’s the people – the talent both in front of and behind the screen – that makes us the second biggest producing territory for Netflix outside the US.
‘This was always about building a base and setting up the business in the UK for the long-term and there is so much more to come.’
As well as Man Vs Bee, there are six more shows on the way, including football comedy The Red Zone, produced by Sir Sam Mendes and written by sports journalists Barney Ronay and Jonathan Liew.
Novel The Seven Deaths Of Evelyn Hardcastle, a murder mystery from author Stuart Turton, will be adapted for television by screenwriter Sophie Petzal.
Sex Education writer Richard Gadd has also penned comedy Baby Reindeer, based on a one-man show.
He will also grace our screens in the series.
Sarah Dollard, Andrea Gibb and Corinna Faith have written horror series Cuckoo Song – the story of two sisters who work together to help their grief-stricken family.
Except it’s no ordinary family, as one sister happens to be a monster.
The screen adaptation of Sally Green’s book series, Half Bad, is landing on the platform, exploring the life of a feared witch’s teenage son.
Half Bad is written by Joe Barton and produced by Andy Serkis.
Netflix has also commissioned Lockwood & Co, by writer and director Joe Cornish – which focuses on a gang of gifted teenage ghost hunters.
Bring it on.
