'The Bold and the Beautiful': Thomas is 'Going Down the Depths of Mental Instability' and Matthew Atkinson Commends the Show
Mannequins and all, Matthew Atkinson is delivering one of the most complex character portrayals on daytime television right now for his role as Thomas Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful. The actor spoke recently about the seriousness of what Thomas is going through and how the show is shining a light on mental health.
Thomas Forrester is going through some serious issues right now on ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’
At first, it looked like Thomas was actually not as dark of a character as he once was. But now, it looks like he is spiraling out of control. He has been keeping a mannequin of his ex and the mother of his son, Hope Logaan. It has been disturbing for Wyatt Spencer, but other folks like Hope and Thomas’s sister, Steffy, aren’t wanting to hold him accountable right now.
Matthew Atkinson says the show is bringing a lot of awareness to mental health
Before, Thomas’s issues weren’t explicitly defined in the vein of mental health awareness, but Atkinson has been sure to cite this in recent interviews. He talked about how the show is tackling this issue through the lens of Thomas in a recent sit-down with Soaps in Depth.
The actor explained, “I think they did a great job with making this sort of a going down the depths of the mental instability of Thomas and making it a serious issue for him. Because mental health is a thing we should all be talking about, especially right now. It might spark some conversations. I think it’s really cool.”
At first, the mannequin thing seemed to be a poke at what the shows have to do while filming during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the show has turned it into something that lies in a truly deeper issue. “You can see that Thomas is suffering,” he added. “This isn’t something he’s creating out of nowhere. It’s not him obsessing over Hope. it’s something that seems to be happening to him. I can’t tell you how deep it’s gonna go, but I will say that it definitely is a very serious thing that’s happening to him and… man, it’s gonna be a wild ride!”
“He’s obviously suffering with this greatly,” Atkinson continued. “He isn’t sleeping, he can’t seem to tell the difference between reality and this weird world that he’s being surrounded with. They’re sort of getting distorted together. And that can drive a person to [do] horrible things.”
The bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS.
