Many fans of The Good Doctor were left devastated by the death of Dr Neil Melendez (played by Nicholas Gonzalez) at the end of season three. However, now Shaun Murphy star Freddie Highmore has teased how he could potentially be returning – here’s what has been revealed.

How could Melendez return in The Good Doctor season 4?

The Good Doctor will be returning to Monday evenings on ABC from November 2 as the doctors of St Bonaventure Hospital come back to screens.

As the new series starts, one huge thing which will be hanging over the staff is the loss of Melendez.

Fans will remember he was left with severe internal injuries caused by the San Jose earthquake in the season three finale.

Then over the final episode, these became infected before he died in a heartbreaking twist.

However, now going into season four, the cast has opened up about how he might still be involved in the show.

Speaking on a panel at New York Comic-Con, Highmore revealed a bit about what could happen.

He said: “It’s a loss that will be felt across the entire hospital.

“[But] I’d like to stay hopeful that even though Dr Melendez is no longer with us on the show, he will still be very much a part of it.

“His presence will still be felt, and maybe we’ll get to see him again at some point. You never know.”

The tease will have likely left fans excited as it leaves the possibility of the character’s return open.

However, nothing more was revealed about how this could happen in the series.

One possibility might be Melendez returning in flashback sequences or as a vision to some of the remaining characters.

Fans will just have to wait and see how this will play out when the show returns.

During the panel, the other cast members did also tease how their characters will be dealing with his loss into season four.

This will lead to a new friendship evolving between Dr Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) and Dr Claire Brown (Antonia Thomas).

Chang explained: “I think it’s extremely upsetting for both of them.

“They loved him and were loved by him, in different and similar ways.

“For Dr Lim, it has impacted her [while] dealing with COVID.

“So, I think because she’s in the position she is, being the Chief of Surgery, she doesn’t get into how she feels about that, at least straight away.”

Much of the series’ two-part opener will examine how the hospital staff deals with coronavirus COVID-19.

They will be tested by the strain it puts on them and their patients when the show returns.

The Good Doctor begins on ABC on November 2.
