The legacy of Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel) finally came to a close in the sixth season of History’s popular drama, Vikings. After the series wrapped up on Amazon Prime Video last December, a new theory has proposed a dramatically different take on the feud between Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) and Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig).
Season six of History’s wildly successful medieval series Vikings may have contained some key character details fans missed on the first time round.
Since the death of former series lead, Ragnar Lothbrok, fans have been gripped by the subsequent rivalries of his surviving children.
An ongoing conflict between Ivar the Boneless and Bjorn Ironside finally came to a head at the end of the first half of Vikings sixth season.
This instalment left fans ruminating over a devastating cliffhanger, which left Bjorn bleeding on the shores of Vestfold after being stabbed by his half-brother.
Thankfully, Bjorn was able to fight off his encroaching death long enough to take one last stand against Ivar and the Rus.
He finally took his last breath in the midseason premiere, ‘King of Kings’, with Ivar soon succumbing himself during a battle against King Alfred (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) and the English.
Their tragic final moments in the series may have been made even more depressing by some subtle details spotted by a perceptive Vikings fan.
This viewer took to Reddit when they noticed some revealing facial cues during a rewatch of the series.
User Janzo543 posted: “Since watching clips on Youtube after finishing the show I’ve noticed from the look in Ivar’s eyes that he feels some kind of love towards Bjorn.”
The post goes on to outline several moments in which Ivar seems physically pained to be causing harm to his half-brother.
Extensive evidence could prove that Ivar didn’t want to kill Bjorn after all, and wouldn’t have struck him down at all were it not for the heat of battle.
They continued: “I noticed this when Ivar fired an arrow at Bjorn when he was trying to take Kattegat back from Ivar.”

“Ivar looked at Bjorn with some kind of regret which makes you wonder what is going through Ivar’s head.”
Down in the comments, other fans also noted a number of instances in which the two half-brothers appeared reluctant to engage one another in combat.
One viewer maintained Ivar appeared to immediately regret stabbing Bjorn in the midseason finale.
The original poster added: “I think Ivar’s facial expressions tell their own story.”
“From my point of view it seems like he wishes there was no conflict between their mothers and that things could have been very different between them.”
Meanwhile, another theory suggests the brothers could have even been close friends were it not for Lagertha’s (Katheryn Winnick) reckless decision to kill Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland).
Had the two brothers not been forced to take different sides after Lagertha’s revenge, they could have retained the strong bond they shared as children.
Vikings seasons 1-6 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
