What's next in Corrie ahead of 60th anniversary week – huge spoilers revealed
We are now less than two months away from Coronation Street’s 60th anniversary, and the events occurring during the special week of drama and chaos were revealed recently, involving three storylines.
The celebrations will see Ray Crosby (Mark Frost) plan to flatten Weatherfield to make way for his new development plans, having bought most of the properties and business in the Street.
Aside from Ray bulldozing the cobbles (we’re not joking, he’s probably buying the bulldozers as we write this), the week will also see the conclusion to Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) and Yasmeen Nazir’s (Shelley King) coercive control ordeal, as well as ‘two people battle to keep a shameful secret that will ruin their lives and those around them’.
The scenarios playing out right now will all lead up to the 60th anniversary, and as so much has happened already this year, the episodes airing over the next few weeks will play a pivotal role in setting us up for what’s to come.
So we’re taking a look back at the most tense and gripping storylines from this year and the characters involved, and try to work out what’s next as we count down the days to the 60th anniversary…
Geoff Metcalfe has been at the forefront of one of the show’s most memorable stories ever, and now as Geoff has been disowned by son Tim (Joe Duttine), we’re watching every episode on the edge of our seats, hoping that Geoff’s rein of terror will come to an end soon.
The biggest question still yet to be answered when it comes to Geoff is what really happened to Elaine Jones (Paula Wilcox)? Tim’s mother came to the Street wanting to defend Yasmeen, but once Geoff had come face to face with Elaine for the first time in years, he did what he does best – scared the life out of another vulnerable woman, and since then, we haven’t seen her.
Will the moments before the celebration week finally allow us to discover what happened to Elaine?
Corrie boss Iain MacLeod has already promised that Geoff will get his comeuppance, and it’s a possibility the evil character’s exit may coincide with Yasmeen’s trial, so with it drawing closer and closer, more secrets about Geoff and Elaine’s whereabouts will no doubt be revealed.
Yasmeen’s trial will be a key part of the special week of episodes in December, with us at last learning whether Yasmeen will be facing prison for attempted murder, or whether she will finally be free from her horrific ordeal. Currently, Yasmeen is managing life in prison as well as possible, and even admitted to Alya (Sair Khan) that she doesn’t want to leave, at fear Geoff will hurt her!
It will be interesting to see what’s ahead for her before her trial, will Elaine turn up at the last minute ready to stand as a defence and help to destroy Geoff? Will Yasmeen grow strong enough ready to tell the court the truth about what her life was like living with her controlling husband?
Believe it or not, Gary Windass (Mikey North) has managed to keep the fact that he was responsible for the roof collapse a secret for well over a year now. Since he returned from his honeymoon with Maria (Samia Longchambon) we have discovered Gary has gotten himself into debt, and was even offered a proposition by Ray – but could Gary join forces with him to help destroy the cobbles too?
Gary also has the small matter of Sarah (Tina O’Brien) knowing he killed Rick Neelan (Greg Wood) and with Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) constantly pressuring him too, will the run up see Gary finally start to crack before the residents finally discovering Gary’s crimes?
Leanne and Nick
Leanne (Jane Danson) is living a nightmare right now as she continues her fight for Oliver. Recently we saw Leanne and Steve (Simon Gregson) prepare to take the hospital to court as they continue their plea to not switch off their son’s life support machine, which of course begs the question – will it be a success? Will Leanne and Steve win their battle?
As if Oliver’s illness wasn’t enough, Leanne is also coming to terms with the news that Nick has a son (Jude Riordan). The revelation has, understandably, had an affect on Leanne and Nick’s relationship, but if the court case isn’t a success, will this and the fact that Nick has a perfectly healthy son put a strain on them even more?
Peter and Carla
Peter (Chris Gascoyne) and Carla (Alison King) had their relationship tested a few weeks ago after Abi (Sally Carman) tried to suggest her and Peter should sleep together when he was helping her with her addiction problems.
During the anniversary week, we are also set to see two people battle a shameful secret that’ll ruin their lives and the people around them…could this be referring to a potential affair with Peter and Abi? Peter putting himself in the situation where he was helping an addict also didn’t help his own addiction problems towards alcohol, maybe this secret is that Peter and Abi will both become addicted to alcohol and drugs again, and these coming weeks will see the start of this difficult journey?
Sally and Tim
Despite all the challenges thrown at them this year, Sally (Sally Dynevor) and Tim are still together. Their wedding day went down fairly successfully (thanks to Abi locking Geoff in the conservatory), and now Tim wants nothing to do with his dad, these next few weeks could be pretty big for Tim and Sally.
Yasmeen’s trial will of course mean we will see Tim and Sally a lot, and with Geoff’s time on the Street getting shorter and shorter, something has to happen with Tim and Sally soon, right? Whether it’s Tim discovering where Elaine has been all this time, learning more about his past, or helping to expose Geoff and his lies so Yasmeen can be free, Tim and Sally have played a huge part in how the repercussions of a family member being an abuser can affect other people, and it wouldn’t surprise us if Sally and Tim are faced with another problem before the big trial.
Scott and Johnny
Scott Emberton (Tom Roberts) arrived in Weatherfield with a mysterious persona and it was only Johnny Connor (Richard Hawley) who knew his true identity. Recently, Scott told Johnny that he had got himself a new job working for Ray, and it didn’t take long until Johnny learnt the real reason for Scott’s new job, and that he actually was planning to rip off Ray and steal his money.
Perhaps we will soon learn more about Johnny’s criminal past? Will we finally discover the truth about what happened during that crime that took place 30 years ago?
If Scott’s dodgy job goes ahead and he steals Ray’s money, the sleazy businessman is going to want revenge, and if Scott’s still around during the celebratory week, it’s possible it might not only be the Weatherfield buildings set to get flattened by the bulldozers…
With Ray at the centre of the dramatic storyline that puts the cobbles in jeopardy, the rest of October and November in Weatherfield will allow a perfect set up to form. How many properties and business will Ray end up owning? Will anyone work out Ray’s plans to destroy the Street? Will he join forces with another resident to help gain control of the community’s livelihood?
The tram crash marked 50 years of Coronation Street, and that spectacular evening which shattered the Street is still be spoken about today, which only means the 60-year celebrations are bound to be just memorable.
There is so much more still to come, and with what way these plots are going to go currently being unknown, one thing’s for certain – the Weatherfield community is going to be at the heart of it all, which means the aftermath of the anniversary week has the potential to change the residents lives forever.
