Where has The Mandalorian’s Cobb Vanth appeared in Star Wars before?

Warning: spoilers ahead for season 2 of The Mandalorian.

On Friday, fans of The Mandalorian finally saw actor Timothy Olyphant make his highly-anticipated arrival in season two of the Star Wars series, as Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and The Child were introduced to Mos Pelgo mayor Cobb Vanth.

Timothy was first confirmed as a new member of the cast in May this year, with it later emerging that the Santa Clarita Diet star was playing a new character called Cobb Vanth.

But is Cobb Vanth actually a new character? On The Mandalorian – yes. However, the character has actually appeared in the Star Wars universe before.

Where has Cobb Vanth appeared in the Star Wars universe before?

Five years before Timothy’s Cobb swooped in with his swept back hair, charming demeanour and impressive gunslinging skills, the character made his first appearance in the Star Wars universe in a novel called Aftermath.

Written by Chuck Wendig, the canon novel was set between the last film in the original Star Wars trilogy, the 1983 Return of the Jedi, and before the first film in the sequel trilogy, the 2015 The Force Awakens.

The narrative of the book follows the Battle of Endor, which is featured at the end of Return of the Jedi and results in the Empire being diminished,

On the planet of Tatooine, where Luke and Anakin Skywalker famously grew up, Cobb appears when he comes across a man called Adwin Charu negotiating with the Jawas over equipment he wishes to get his hands on.

After Cobb helps Adwin gain some rapport with the Jawas, they come across a set of Mandalorian armour, which both men want for themselves.

Adwin – who turns out to be an affiliate of crime syndicate the Red Key Raiders – is shot by Cobb, who then claims the armour for himself.

As we see in The Mandalorian, Cobb becomes sheriff and protector of Mos Pelgo, a town in Tatooine that was invaded by the Red Key Raiders.

How does Cobb Vanth’s story continue in The Mandalorian?

Following the events of Star Wars: Aftermath, in episode one of The Mandalorian season two, we meet Cobb as the Mandalorian does – in Mos Pelgo, dressed in Mandalorian armour.

However, it’s not just the fact that he is wearing Mandalorian armour that is significant. The armour he is wearing belonged to none other than Boba Fett, the bounty hunter thought to have perished in Return of the Jedi, who many Star Wars fans suspect to still be alive at this point in the story.

While Cobb and the Mandalorian bid each other farewell at the end of the episode, after Mando helps Mos Pelgo and the Sand People deal with a monstrous Krayt Dragon that’s been terrorising their land, we suspect this won’t be the last we see of Timothy in the critically acclaimed Star Wars series.

Season 1 and the first episode of season 2 of The Mandalorian is available to watch on Disney Plus.
