Who is Coronation Street's Todd Grimshaw? All you need to know about his return

Todd Grimshaw is back on Coronation Street with a fresh face, thanks to actor Gareth Pierce having taken over the role from Bruno Langley. The character has been absent from Weatherfield since December 2017, so why has he suddenly returned to town? And can you recall why Todd exited in the first place? Here’s a reminder of Todd’s tumultuous history on the Street:

So, who is Todd Grimshaw?

Todd is the youngest son of Eileen Grimshaw, who previously had two stints on Coronation Street – the first between 2001 and 2004, the second between 2013 and 2017. In each period, he was portrayed by the actor Bruno Langley. His original history on Weatherfield saw him get involved with Sarah Platt, before coming out as gay and leaving for a new life in London.

He returned with a more deceitful personality, having made a mess of his career as a law clerk. After being left beaten in a shock mugging in 2014, Todd appeared to have finally found happiness with local vicar Billy Mayhew. The pair had even taken in Billy’s 13-year-old goddaughter Summer Spellman, eventually becoming her legal guardians following the death of her adoptive father Drew.

Why was Bruno Langley written out of Coronation Street?

The actor had his contract with Coronation Street terminated in October 2017 as a result of an internal ITV investigation that followed complaints of sexual harassment and assault made by a woman. That same month, Langley was charged by the police with two counts of sexual assault. In November, the star went on to plead guilty to those two counts and was sentenced to a 12-month community order and 40 days of rehabilitation activity. It was reported in May 2019 that Langley now makes his living as a portrait photographer.

So why did Todd leave in December 2017?

The on-screen drama saw Todd skip town with Summer in tow after growing increasingly scared that her grandmother would remove her from his and Billy’s care. The pair were absent for a month, but in January 2018, Summer resurfaced with news that the police had caught up with her and Todd. Summer then revealed that Todd – in a state of panic – had then assaulted a police officer before disappearing into woodland and ultimately going on the run.

And why has he now returned?

Todd’s former partner Billy has been searching for him for weeks now, with a private investigator hired by the Weatherfield vicar having now revealed that Eileen’s errant son went to ground after ripping off a gangster. Now, Todd is to reach out to Eileen with the drama set to see her receive a note from Todd asking her to meet him at an old warehouse. Craig then calls at No 11, with news that a body has been found that matches Todd’s description.

With Eileen wrestling with the dilemma of whether to identity this corpse knowing that Todd is actually alive, she heads off to meet with her boy. But it soon transpires that Todd hasn’t lost his knack for trailing a whole load of trouble in his wake…

What has actor Gareth Pierce appeared in before joining Coronation Street?

The Welsh-born actor and musician featured as Karl Sheldon in the second series of the BBC1 drama Ordinary Lies and as Lenny Mack in Sky 1’s Stella. He also played Alun Price in police drama Hinterland and has recently been heard as Gavin Moss’s son Philip in BBC Radio 4’s The Archers. Speaking about his signing to Corrie, Pierce said: ‘I’m thrilled to be joining such an iconic show and to have been entrusted with taking Todd forward into some really exciting storylines. It’s an honour to be part of the dedicated Coronation Street team in such unprecedented times.’
