Before the latest instalment of Yellowstone came to an earth-shattering conclusion, Jamie Dutton faced some uncomfortable truths about his mysterious past. Ahead of the Paramount Network’s Western drama continuing next year, fans may have spotted a glaring plot hole regarding his major discovery.
Dutton Ranch suffered a major blow at the end of Yellowstone’s third season as John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) and his children were targeted by unknown assassins.
With the fate of John, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) hanging in the balance, the ranch could see a major shake-up at the beginning of next season.
Thankfully, the Paramount Network have confirmed Taylor Sheridan’s popular neo-Western series will continue, with season four eying a 2021 release date.
In the meantime, fans have been debating the shady circumstances surrounding Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentely) and his meeting with his biological father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton).
Despite being raised as a Dutton for his entire life, Jamie’s world came to a standstill in episode seven, The Beating, when he discovered his birth certificate.
Jamie realised the secret of his adoption had been kept from him since childhood, and learned his real father was a man with a dangerous past named Garrett Randall.
The adopted son of John Dutton confronted his real father in the penultimate episode of the new season, and faced up to an uncomfortable truth.
During their difficult conversation, Garrett revealed he had murdered Jamie’s real mother when she became addicted to drugs.
His existential journey formed some of the most riveting drama in Yellowstone’s third season, but some fans have taken issue with Jamie’s latest discovery.
They took to Reddit to argue whether it was realistic for this dark secret to have been kept from him this whole time.
One Redditor kicked things off: “Anyone else think that it’s weird that Jaime handled all the legal paperwork with the ranch, but never came across any documents about him being adopted?
“Or during his Harvard Law school years he never looked up information about himself?”

Somehow, Yellowstone fans were made to believe Jamie had never seen his official documentation after all these year’s living on Dutton Ranch.
All it would take to expose the truth is a brief look at his birth certificate, which has inexplicably remained hidden to him this whole time.
As another fan elaborated: “I find it hard to believe that he never needed his birth certificate until then. And if John wanted to keep it a secret, he surely would have gotten ahold of the certificate.”
However, other viewers disagreed, and insisted it was perfectly reasonable for Jamie not to have come across his certificate until now.
One more fan responded: “Jamie never had a reason to suspect because he was raised as a Dutton and John & Evelyn never wanted him to feel like anything but their son.
“Second, from everything we’ve seen, it seems like Jamie’s never had to worry about handling any of those things.”
Fans will have to wait and see if the issue is resolved in season three, although Jamie may have more pressing concerns to worry about after the horrific attack on the Duttons in the finale.
Yellowstone is available to watch on the Paramount Network.
