DOJ proposes rule in attempt to limit so-called ‘ghost guns’
Some “ghost guns” could get serial numbers under a proposed Department of Justice rule.
Authorities have been sounding the alarm for years about so-called “ghost guns,” which can be legally built at home from ready made kits or with 3-D printing, and are almost impossible to track.
The weapons have been found increasingly at crime scenes, according to the DOJ, which said 23,000 weapons without serial numbers were seized from 2016 to 2020.
Under the new rule, proposed Friday, retailers would be required to run background checks before selling some gun kits, and manufacturers would have to add serial numbers to the gun’s “receiver,” or frame.
The public will have 90 days to comment on the rule, once it is published in the Federal Register.
