Florida man wins $1M on lottery ticket he believed to be worth $1K
A Florida lotto winner was shocked to learn he’d be taking home $1 million after initially thinking the prize was $1,000, officials said.
Lee Wingfield, 63, bought the winning scratch-off ticket for $20 from a Publix Super Market location in Tallahassee, the Florida Lottery said Friday.
“I originally thought I won $1,000, so I put the ticket in my pocket and went about my day. That night I realized my prize had a lot more than three zeros in it,” Wingfield said.
Wingfield chose to receive the prize money as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $890,000 when he claimed his ticket at the lotto headquarters.
The grocery store will get a $2,000 commission for selling the winning ticket.
Lotto players have a 1-in-2.96 chance of getting lucky on the 200X THE CASH scratch-off game, which has prizes up to $5 million, officials said.
