Grizzly bear attacks mountain biker in Montana: authorities
A mountain biker in Montana was attacked by a grizzly bear during a ride near Big Sky, authorities said.
The victim was biking alone on a private property trail just outside Ousel Falls Park Trail near Big Sky in southern Montana, the Billings Gazette reported.
He likely surprised the bear when he rounded a sharp corner during his Monday afternoon ride.
“It does not look like a predatory attack,” Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks spokesperson Morgan Jacobsen told the newspaper.
The man, who managed to escape, walked to a nearby road and got help from a passing driver. It’s unclear how far the injured man had to walk, Jacobsen said.
The victim, who had facial and back injuries and is in his 60s, was airlifted to a hospital in Billings, where he was listed in critical but stable condition, Jacobsen said.
Authorities shut down the trail as an investigation into the incident continues, but game wardens are not actively searching for the bear, the newspaper reported.
With bears now fully out of hibernation, Jacobsen urged nearby residents to be prepared for possible encounters by carrying bear spray and to travel in groups when outside, KRTV reported.
