He will go to Portugal as part of an inquiry involving local, British and German investigators.

The witness will visit key locations to try to collect more evidence against Christian B, 44, a source in Germany said.

Christian B was identified by German prosecutors last June as the man who they said was responsible for Madeleine's ''abduction and murder''.

They said they had "concrete evidence" she had been murdered but so far they have failed to charge Christian B with any crime.

He is currently in jail in Germany for raping an elderly woman in 2005 in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

Last night a source in Germany said: ''One of the key witnesses was due to go back to Portugal earlier this year to take part in a visit of certain key locations in the case.

''For operational reasons the details of the places to be checked are being kept secret but the aim was to try and collect more evidence against Christian B.

''German police, Scotland Yard and the Portuguese authorities were also going to take part and the man was going to go in January but because of Covid it was postponed.

"It will now take place later this year once the Covid situation has settled – it is being seen as a key part of the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance."

Madeleine was nearly four when she vanished from the same Algarve resort in May 2007.

Her parents Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, plan to mark her 18th birthday next week.
