Trump calls Gov. Cuomo ‘a bully thug,’ trashes NY pandemic response
President Trump unloaded on Gov. Andrew Cuomo — calling him “a bully thug” who badly mishandled New York’s response to the coronavirus outbreak and who heads “probably the worst-run state in the country.”
Trump’s broadside came after he was asked about Cuomo’s new book, “American Crisis: Leadership Lessons From the COVID-19 Pandemic,” during an interview with Newsmax’s “Greg Kelly Reports.” The Cuomo book is critical of the Trump administration’s handling of the pandemic.
“He did a very poor job. And a very sad thing: Thousands and thousands of people died unnecessarily. No. 1 in our nation,” Trump said in the interview, referring to the number of New Yorkers who’ve died from the coronavirus.
The Johns Hopkins University tracker reports that 33,316 New York deaths are linked to confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases. The state Health Department says 25,606 residents have died from the bug — by far the highest tally of any state in the country.
“And then he wrote a book. I guess it’s a negative book. I don’t know. Who the hell’s gonna read it? But I guess he wrote a book and it’s negative,” the president said.
Trump noted again that the White House provided New York a Navy medical ship and helped set up an emergency hospital at the Javits Center, as well as supplied ventilators and personal protective equipment, to help grapple with the pandemic.
“We gave him the hospital — we gave him the Javits Center — he could have put those patients in there, he never even used them,” Trump said.
“And he actually hardly used them, and we spent a lot of money helping him, and he’s very unappreciative. You know, he’s a thug and he’s very unappreciative. It’s one of those things.
“People are leaving NY because of people like him. He’s a bully thug.”
At one point, Trump claimed that Cuomo has sicced New York prosecutors to investigate him.
“He should be prosecuted, frankly,” Trump said.
“New York is one of the worst-run states in the country. Probably the worst-run state in the country. It’s very sad what happened in New York … It just crashed,” said Trump.
The president said he still “loves New York,” though he had changed his official residence to the battleground state of Florida.
Cuomo’s office responded in kind.
“Give me a break — More than 216,000 Americans died because of the federal government’s incompetent and bumbling pandemic response,” said Cuomo senior adviser Richard Azzopardi.
“And Trump knew the whole time how deadly it was and never raised the alarm. Instead he told the American people to drink bleach and then went golfing — a lot.
“The governor has worked hard every day to protect New Yorkers and cut everyone’s taxes while Trump raised them with his SALT cap — not that he’d know, he doesn’t pay them anyway,” Azzopardi said.
But Trump’s criticism of Cuomo wasn’t limited to the pandemic.
The president also slammed the governor for blocking the Williams Northeast natural gas pipeline project from going through New York, claiming he’s beholden to his ex-brother-in-law, environmental activist Robert Kennedy Jr. He said the pipeline would slash energy costs.
“Bobby Kennedy is his boss,” Trump said.
The Cuomo administration denied a permit for the pipeline to supply natural gas to Long Island and part of the city, citing the state’s sweeping climate change law to transition toward clean energy.
