Why are Beatrice and Eugenie princesses?

PRINCESSES Beatrice and Eugenie are the daughters of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have eight grandchildren – including Zara Tindall, and Princes William and Harry.

Why are Beatrice and Eugenie princesses?

Beatrice and Eugenie's great-great-grandfather, George V, issued a Letters Patent in 1917.

This paved the way for the sisters to be called princesses.

George V's patent says that the Monarch’s grandchildren can hold Prince or Princess royal titles.

It reads: "The grandchildren of the sons of any such sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of dukes of these our realms."

Princess Eugenie’s official title was Her Royal Highness, Princess Eugenie of York, before her 2018 wedding to Jack Brooksbank.

That's because her dad, Prince Andrew, is the Duke of York.

She is now known as Her Royal Highness, Princess Eugenie, Mrs Jack Brooksbank.

Her sister Beatrice, "as a male-line grandchild of the Queen, is styled Her Royal Highness, with the title Princess," explains Debrett's in London.

She married Italian property tycoon Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a private ceremony at Windsor Castle in July 2020.

Beatrice became an Italian ‘contessa’ (countess) or ‘Nobile Donna’ (noblewoman) upon their marriage, explains the Express.

Edoardo’s dad, Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi is descended from Italian aristocracy, it adds.

Count Mozzi said: “Edoardo is the only male descendant taking the family into the next generation."

The Queen has bestowed titles on royal descendants who weren't covered by George V's Letters Patent, which is limited to just the Monarch's grandchildren.

She stepped in ahead of Kate's birth to George to issue a Letters Patent to ensure all the Cambridges' children would have fitting titles.

Princess Charlotte would have been a Lady and Prince Louis a Lord had the Queen not intervened, and they would have not been HRHs.

But Harry and Meghan's son, Archie, wasn't automatically entitled to the Prince title, as he is not the child of a future monarch.

Being a prince or princess does not automatically mean royals have police protection.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie's security is no longer paid for by the taxpayer.

Are Beatrice and Eugenie in line to the throne?

The Royal Family is expanding – with Princess Eugenie giving birth to a son, August Philip, while Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to welcome their second child, a sister for little Archie.

So what does the growing clan mean in terms of succession?

The throne will pass to Prince Charles if the Queen abdicates, retires or dies.

Next in line after Charles is eldest son Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, and then his children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Louis does not leapfrog his sister Charlotte in the line of succession after the law favouring male heirs was changed.

Prince Harry – who was third in line to the throne in 2013 – is sixth in line.

Meghan and Harry's baby Archie is seventh in line to the throne.

Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, is bumped down the line to eighth.

His and Sarah Ferguson's first-born girl, Beatrice, is ninth in line, with her sister Eugenie tenth in the succession list.

Do Beatrice and Eugenie have children?

Princess Beatrice is step-mum to her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi's son Christopher Woolf.

She reportedly "can't wait" to have children.

In 2020 a source told US Weekly magazine: "Bea can't wait to have kids of her own.

"She's planning to start a family with Edo very soon and is hoping it'll happen this year."

Bookies slashed odds on the eldest York sister announcing in December 2020 that she was to have a baby with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. But that never transpired.

In the meantime she is an aunt to Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's son, who was born on February 9, 2021.

The couple named their son August Philip.

The new royal baby – Eugenie and Mr Brooksbank's first child – is the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh's ninth great-grandchild.
